Alan was born and grew up in Manchester where he began playing in the school band at the age of 6. At the age of 10 Alan was awarded the ‘Junior Exhibition’ from Manchester Education Committee. Before going to school at Chethams Alan played with all the major ensembles in Manchester. Alan also played with many brass bands including Black Dyke and Grimethorpe, jazz bands, pop bands, show bands in addition to chamber music and solo performances.

Alan now performs and teaches and isn't growing a beard.
